Did you know that only 20% of children with cancer survive in the Nairobi area (Kenya), while 60% of children with cancer have a curable form of the disease? At World Child Cancer, we aim to change these distressing statistics and provide sustainable treatment options that benefit children in Nairobi and its surroundings.
Thanks to the generous financial support of Lexence, a special collaboration has been initiated between the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and the Prinses Máxima Centrum, with the primary goal of improving treatment and increasing the survival rate of children with cancer. KNH is not just any hospital; it is the oldest and largest referral and teaching hospital in Kenya. With 2400 beds and over 6000 dedicated staff members, it treats almost 1 million patients annually, including 800,000 outpatients. Within this impressive infrastructure, KNH has a specialized pediatric oncology department led by Dr. Irene Nzamu. Dr. Irene and her team of two pediatric oncologists see approximately 350 new cases of childhood cancer each year (2023).
On the other side of this collaboration is Dr. Minke Huibers from the Prinses Máxima Centrum, who serves as the coordinator of the program with KNH. The main aim of this collaboration is to share and transfer knowledge and skills to support Dr. Irene and her team in improving the outlook for children with cancer in Nairobi. And the results speak volumes. In 2023, significant successes were achieved, with substantial progress in patient data registration. Additionally, children being treated at the hospital can now enjoy a new playroom, completed in the same year. Thanks to this fruitful collaboration, the treatment of children with cancer has been optimized, and more than 368 healthcare professionals (including nurses, clinicians, and others) have received valuable training!
Together, we provide hope to these brave children and strive for a future where childhood cancer is no longer a life-threatening disease but a challenge that can be overcome.
